The order in which things happen during one monster's turn. (Disambiguation: for information about how to determine the order in which several monsters take their turns, see Attack Bar.)

Summary[]

Several things happen over the course of a single monster's turn, and they all revolve around that monster's action. Remember for this purpose, Harmful Effects are divided into two types: Inability and Weakening.

  1. Start of turn
    • Process recovery buff, bombs, inability effects, continuous damage
  2. Action
    • Choose a skill to activate
  3. End of turn
    • Process all other Beneficial Effects and Weakening Effects

To process an effect means the following things occur:

  1. The effect happens:
    • Recovery buff heals damage
    • Inability effects cause the monster's action to be skipped
    • Continuous Damage deals damage
    • Other buffs and debuffs passively alter the monster's stats, or prevent damage, etc
  2. The buff / debuff counts down by one
    • If this brings the buff / debuff's timer down to zero, then it expires and disappears.  Unless it's a bomb, then it explodes.

Detail[]

Start of turn[]

  • Process only certain effects in the following order:
    1. Recovery buff
    2. Bomb: if a Bomb debuff expires on its own, then it explodes. When a bomb explodes, it activates a 1-turn stun, which may then be processed immediately afterward.
    3. Inability effects: Stun, Freeze, and Sleep. These effects prevent the monster from acting, which is why they must be processed before the monster's action.
    4. Continuous damage

Action[]

  • If the monster had any inability effects on it during step one, this step was already skipped.
  • If the monster has any beneficial or weakening effects on it, then they are in full force during the action.

End of turn[]

  • Every other beneficial and weakening effect now gets its counter reduced by one. If that brings any counters to zero, then those buffs / debuffs expire, and disappear.
  • Additional Turn effects may happen here, e.g. Violent runes or some skills. If so, repeat from the Start of Turn.

Trivia[]

If a monster is debuffed with 1-turn sleep and also continuous damage, then the sleep will prevent the monster's action, and then expire before the damage can wake it up.

If a monster is debuffed with 2-turn sleep and also continuous damage, then the sleep will prevent the monster's action, and count down to 1-turn sleep; then the monster takes the continuous damage, and the dot counts down by 1 turn; and the damage wakes up the monster by removing the sleep debuff. (Then the monster gets no action because it was asleep. Then the monster's other buffs and debuffs count down too. Then its turn ends.)

The Threat buff does not count down on its own. It only counts down when the buffed monster receives an attack from an enemy.
